The footprint above is a photo of an actual martian footprint. That is, it is an image of a human footprint that is actually on the planet. The footprint belongs to Caden Daniel Wakefield and was encoded on a microchip when Caden was about one-year old and placed aboard the Mars Pathfinder lander on its mission to the surface of mars, July 4, 1997. |
The image used on many of these pages indicates a 'behind-the-scenes' pathway with additional materials, photos, and occasional ramblings of the poet as he takes you on his own walk through some of the works in this presentation. If you find this additional material distracting, then simply stay with the link panels at the bottom of each work (or group page) to view the works without the bric-a-brac. The 'poet's walk' is still under construction so watch out for falling debris and other obstacles. In many cases the 'trail' will allow you to return. In some cases you may wind up in a cul-de-sac and need to come up to the lobby for air. In any event, the link panels or back-button on your browser should get you where you want to go. There may also be several trails leading off from the same page. For example, you might want to get on with it and go visit the 'core' biographical work in the show, "Stone Above, Sky Below"
Or, continue with the text and take another trail:
Speaking of Mars, why don't we go pay a visit to the old beet and say hello. Noguchi designed an earthwork with just that in mind. Well, not exactly. At first he called it 'Monument to Man' and only later changed it to 'Sculpture with pyramidal construction to be seen from Mars.' At any rate, back in 1948 when most American artists were worrying about authentic American experience, Noguchi is already lifting consciousness off the planet. Let's go take a peek (or you may use the panel button to return to the lobby)
or perhaps you'd like to meet the poet? I think you'll find Red over that way, indulging in that 2nd most popular pasttime of poets
. . .
talking about themselves!
