Welcome to the 2022 presentation of "War of the Trumps" (WOT). This guide offers a few useful ideas to viewing the performance of WOT 2022. The site is a little different from the layouts of most other web pages. Some important points first:
- The play is not intended for viewing on small screen devices (mobile phones, tablets, etc.) and probably won't work on them. Laptops and Desktop machines with 15" screens or better should work fine. It has only been tested on firefox (v. 107.0.1, 108.0.1) and it is not known how it performs on other browsers (let me know if you try it on another browser.)
- Starting with the opening page, the play moves through a series of sections from the top of the page to the bottom and successively through three separate files (Overture, Act 1, Act 2). Many of the sections have clickable images to the left and right to help to move through the drama or, optionally, to skip sections as one prefers.
- Do not start an audio performance if another is still playing. Pause the one that is playing first. Otherwise they will simply play over one another. There is some audio control code that will take care of that, but it's tricky for me and is not installed at this time.
- War of the Trumps is free for personal viewing and use. It is also copyrighted. I don't much care for copyrights, but they are necessary to prevent commercial and other forms exploitation. No choice about that. So please respect my right to insure the work is used for the purposes intended and is not abused. There is only one authorized site, database or other online source where the WOT files should be, 'poems4change.org' If you come across any other installations of this work, please let me know. Of course, everyone is welcome to share links to the poems4change installation of WOT and I'd be pleased if the link, http://poems4change.org/wot/wot2022.html gets around and offers entertainment and food for thought to others. - thank you, red.
- There are a number of things that need improvement or are under construction. Some may be done over the next few weeks. Others will wait until next Halloween to get fixed. I've done enough for this year. However, if you find any obvious things that don't work (and you are using a recent version of firefox) then please let me know. Most of that can easily be fixed and I will tend to it ASAP. Thank you.
Navigating War of the Trumps
WOT's structure is fairly straight-forward and navigation is relatively easy. The sections of the drama are presented in layers on the page, from top to bottom. Some of the layers are outside of the of the drama (playbills, breaks, etc.) Each succeeding layer of the play has three bands: a banner with a large image at the center, followed by the audio controls (the same as those generally used for audio presentation) and a script of the audio which can be scrolled and read as the audio is played.
To the left and right of the banner and audio bands there are often clickable images that can jump to other sections of the performance. The text beneath these images will provide a hint to where the jump is going land. Arrows also tell the general direction and purpose of the jump.
- left-side, up-arrows ('↑') generally take one to the previous section of the play.
- left-side, left-arrows ('←') take one out of the flow to some other previous section.
- right-side, down-arrows ('↓') will mainly take one to the next section of the current part of the drama .
- right-side, right-arrows ('→') often skip the current section and go to the next break/intermission or performance section.
There are several ways to navigate the performance:
Click & Scroll
- This is the best way to enjoy the presentation as docudrama (parody). As you move through the performance, you are presented with four bands in each section of the play. The first is a banner with a wide image in the middle of the page. That image introduces the new section. Keep in mind, the "tour" trope that is used in the play is also the literal way the drama has been constructed - a bit of a tour through its scenes and landmarks.
- The second band is the audio control offering the reading of the next scene in the play.
- The Overture segments and each scene of the drama begins with a verse from Jerome Rothenberg's "Mad King — Lies". There are eight of them and carry us through to the last act and scene of the play;
- Simply start the audio and scroll down, reading the script to the end of that part of the performance. At the end of each script there is an 'Express Donkey'. When clicked, it will take you to the next performance section, skipping any breaks or other flotsam that may be on the trail.
scroll & Scroll
You can also simply scroll through the entire page and see every section/scene, break etc. that the play offers. At the bottom of the page you will find an image or the Express Donkey that will take you to the next Act (file) where you can begin scrolling again.
Navigation bar/menu
The navbar links to all of the main sections of the performance. There is also a 'Points of Interest' tab that ventures into other kinds of "tour extras" you may want to visit.
'The WOT Lounge' it is just a facebook group link I set up to come talk about the play and hang out with friends. Check it out, on the odd-chance it might be a place you'll like to bookmark and visit just to get away from it all and have some congenial cafe conversations. Never try, never know.
That's about it, folks. For all its many faults and imperfections, I hope you enjoy the show, at least find it entertaining. If you happen upon a little food for thought along the way, well, that's a bonus.
